Improve
Security and Upgrade Aging Systems with Thin Clients.
According to a recent study by IntelliQuest, improving security technology is the highest priority in business today,
with forty percent of those surveyed stating that it is their most important
goal over the next 12 months. Thirty-six percent of the participants
cited updating aging systems as their main priority for the next year.
There has never been a better time to consider thin clients as a means
of achieving both improved security and increased productivity.
Security Issues
Malware - Just about everyone has become painfully
aware of the danger of malicious programs like worms, viruses, and trojan
horses. PC viruses cost businesses $55 billion dollars
in damages in 2003. The down time that companies often struggle with
as they recover from these
attacks can cripple productivity, not to mention adversely affect a firm’s
reputation.
Hardware and Data Theft – Businesses
have seen computers being stolen, along with the sensitive data stored
on them. Corporate information
is sometimes copied to disk and removed, where it can end up in the hands
of competitors or worse.
Regulation – The concern about collection and storage of personal
data has resulted in a number government regulations designed to protect
this collected information. It is crucial for companies to be prepared
to show compliance with these regulations or face potentially expensive
penalties.
Replacing aging PCs? Consider Thin Clients.
The increasing threat of virus and worm attacks, combined with the need
for strict control over data security are the two of the most important
reasons that IT professionals are considering replacing older equipment
with a more modern server-centric
data center computer equipment.
Familiar Interface and Higher Performance
This thin
client environment consists of a centralized server for data
storage and powerful thin client terminals. These terminals are equipped
with familiar graphical interface that PC users have become comfortable
using. Combined with today’s high speed networks and powerful servers,
thin clients perform as well or faster in running the same applications
that were previously run locally on a desktop PC.
Corporate Data is Safe and Secure
The important difference is that all of these applications are now running
safely and securely on central servers which are managed and updated
for all users. Anti-virus protection can be updated daily. Users cannot
disable virus protection, cannot install software, cannot copy data to
local machines. All of the data is saved and stored on this secure server,
nothing is saved on the thin client terminal. All of the software and
applications are managed on a few servers, rather than on tens or hundreds
of PCs, which is a significant improvement from a cost as well as a security
standpoint. Password protection and more advanced authentication methods
such as smart cards or fingerprint recognition are also available to
further increase security and permit data access only by authenticated
users.
Disaster Recovery and Less Down Time
Data backup is handled on the central server, and disaster recovery
is immediate. If a thin client terminal is damaged or destroyed, a new
one can be installed with ease and will automatically configure itself
without the need for IT assistance. The data and software accessed will
look and feel the same for any user on the network, which makes it easy
for users to work in different locations.
