Recycling and remanufacturing save money and the environment.

The times they are a changin’

With rapidly improving technology, HIPAA regulation upgrades and company mergers, organizations are constantly making changes to improve the quality and efficiency of their operations. For most businesses, change is welcome, but as a result of these technology advances, there is a growing concern about the issue of computer equipment waste. The EPA estimates that nearly 250 million computers will become obsolete in the next five years. Advances in technology are making it necessary for many to replace their computers every 3-5 years, and it is estimated that this will decrease to 2 years in the near future.

We recycle

Recycling has become a way of life for many of us at home. We recycle newspapers, plastic and glass easily and enthusiastically. Eighty-four percent of people in the US have access to some form of paper recycling, and over half of us do it. But things are different at the office or plant. It is estimated that less than ten percent of discarded computers are currently recycled. Old computer equipment is stored, or increasingly just tossed out in the trash. There is a growing concern about computer equipment and other electronic equipment filling up our landfills. EPA studies are being initiated as to the environmental impact of this e-waste. Some states are enacting legislation regarding disposal of computer equipment, forcing businesses to look at other options, like recycling or remanufacturing. The National Recycling Coalition’s first choice for end-of-life computers is REUSE. Extending the life of old products minimizes pollution and resource consumption.
