White Paper on Thin
Clients Discusses the Most Recent Research.
Wyse Technology has recently released a white
paper which examines the environmental benefits of thin computing
compared to conventional desktop PCs. Vecmar carries the complete
line of new Wyse
thin client terminals as well carrying a complete inventory
of the most popular
legacy Wyse thin clients.
The Wyse white paper provides results from some of
the most recent research data comparing Wyse thin clients to PCs.
The research focuses on four key areas: Energy effiiciency, life
span/reliability, reduction of hazardous and raw materials, and
recyclability.
Environmental Impacts
During the lifespan of a computer's use electricity
consumption and heat output are the primary impacts on the environment.
According to the Wyse White Paper, it is estimated that 15% of
an organizations's energy costs and carbon footprint results from
information technology use. Of this 15% - 39% is attributed to
the use of PCs. Another impact is the disposal of computers at
the end of their useful life. The National Recycling Coalition
reports that between 1997 and 2007 nearly 500 million personal
computers became obsolete. This puts a heavy burden on the environment
especially when the hazardous substances and materials contained
in the waste is not disposed of properly.
Energy Efficiency
Conventional desktop PCs consume an average
of 85-110 Watts (W) of electricity. Thin Clients typically consume
8 - 22 W including the prorated portion of the server operation
and data room cooling (See
a video which demonstrates the energy comparison between Wyse
thin clients and PCs). The Wyse white paper outlines the specific
difference between energy consumption, electricity cost ($) and
CO2 emission of several different PC and thin client computing
scenarios. The data shows dramatic differences , with thin clients
consuming less than half the energy and creating one third of
the CO2 emissions of PCs (download the white paper for specific
details).
Life Span/Reliability
On average, thin clients last twice as long as conventional desktop PCs. A PC is typically considered obsolete after just three years because of advances in computing speed, storage capacity and hardware/software functionality. A thin client has no hard drive and hosts no applications, and therefore does not outlive its usefulness during the same three years. Thin clients have no moving parts, such as disk drives and fans which gives them a lower failure rate as well as longevity. The thin clients white paper from Wyse provides specific data about the Mean Time Before Failure (MTBF) of thin clients as compared to PCs. On average the MTBF of thin clients is up to six times longer than the MTBF of PCs. The longer lifespan of thin clients also means less e-waste. And when you remanufacture your older nonworking thin clients at Vecmar, you are also recycling and helping to conserve raw materials.
