Kasulu Bible College (KBC), located in Kigoma province in western Tanzania, offers computer technology training for students in the Kasulu region of East Africa and also opens its systems to the general public during the evenings as an Internet Cafe, allowing people in this remote region to be a mouse click away from the world community.
William Schrull, I.T. Director of Pawling Corporation and US Advocate of the Anglican Diocese of Western Tanganyika, implemented Wyse 1200LE Thin Clients from Vecmar for this challenging and successful humanitarian effort. Set up as Windows Terminal Server clients, the Wyse 1200LE thin clients are used to access the Internet (via satellite service) and run other standard applications such as word processing and spreadsheet. Since the Kasulu region does not have publicly available electric power, most organizations have to generate their own electricity via gasoline or diesel generators. This is both expensive and inefficient. The project goal was to setup a 10 – 12 node network which would be energy efficient enough to run on solar power.
Using thin clients enabled this network to be set up with minimal power requirements, so that the systems could run using four solar panels and two deep cycle storage batteries. In addition, the dusty environment in Kasulu presented particular maintenance challenges for traditional PC technology. With no hard drives, fans or removable media drives to be concerned with, the Wyse 1200LE thin clients provide a robust and long lasting client PC platform, which is easy to maintain.
